Build your own Shuttlecraft MAGELLAN!
-------------------------------------
Building instructions version 1.0 (18.6.94)

This is a cardboard model of the Shuttlecraft Magellan as
seen on the tv show "Star Trek - The Next Generation".
The scale is 1:50.

What you need:
--------------

- the files magelan1.ps, magelan2.ps and magelan3.ps
- a printer with Postscript ability (or a Postscript
  interpreter)
- three sheets of (letter or A4 sized) cardboard, 0.2 mm
  thick (around 130 g/(m^2))
Be sure NOT to use thicker cardboard!
- a pair of scissors
- a sharp knife
- a ruler
- all-purpose glue (I recommend UHU transparent glue, if that's
  available where you live)
- coloured pencils (red, yellow, orange, light blue, and black)

Instructions:
-------------

Print out the files magelan1.ps, magelan2.ps and magelan3.ps
on the cardboard sheets. If your printer cannot print on
cardboard, print the files on paper and xerox the printouts
on the cardboard.

Useful hints:

- cut out each part as accurately as possible along the solid
  outline.

- __ . __ . __ fold these lines; to make that easier and
more accurate score these lines with a sharp knife before
cutting out the piece. (Make sure not to cut through the
  cardboard with the knife.)

- __ . . __ . . __ lines mark areas where other parts are
to be glued. The number within the area shows which part
  is to be glued there.

- numbers on the tabs show to which part they have to
  be glued

- parts can be rounded (of course only those which are supposed
to be) by either laying them on a soft surface and rolling
over it with a round stick or pencil, or by drawing them over
the edge of the table (try this on a blank piece of cardboard
  first)

- where there are no glueing tabs you have to glue the parts
together by applying glue on their edges

Part 1:	Use a red coloured pencil to paint the lengthy
outline behind the Starfleet logos on parts 1a and 1b.
Also paint the inner ellipses of the Starfleet logos
red on each side (DON'T paint the arrow symbol).
Paint the parts 1e and 1f yellow and paint the little
	rectangles on these parts red.
Paint parts 1g and 1h light blue.

Round parts 1, 1a and 1b so that they fit smoothly
together. Glue parts 1a and 1b to part 1 on the left
	and right side.

Glue part 1/1a/1b on part 1d. Make sure the glueing
tabs fit on the marks on part 1d.

Strengthen part 1c with another layer of cardboard
(just glue it on an empty area of the sheet).
Glue it to the rear opening of part 1/1a/1b/1d,
so that the whole compound becomes a closed box.

Glue parts 1e, 1f, 1g and 1h to the marked areas
	on parts 1a and 1b.

Part 2: Paint the tiny rectangles at the upper sides of
	parts 2a and 2b red.

Round parts 2, 2a and 2b so that they fit smoothly
together. Glue parts 2a and 2b to part 2 on the left
	and right side.

Paint parts 2d and 2e red and glue them to their
	marks on part 2.

Glue part 2/2a/2b/2d/2e to the underside of the
	part 1 compound.

Strengthen part 2c with another layer of cardboard
and glue it to the rear opening of part 2/2a/2b/2d/2e,
so that the whole compound becomes a closed box.

Part 3: Paint the stripes above and below the "ENTERPRISE
SHUTTLECRAFT 32" signs on each side of the Shuttle red.

Also paint the two little markings at the left and right
end of the front wall of part 3 red (between the marking
for part 1c and the side tabs). These are the continuation
of the red stripes on the sides of part 3.

Glue part 3 together to get a closed box.

Part 4: Paint the tiny rectangles at the upper front and rear end
on each side of part 4 red.

Glue part 4 together, so that it becomes a tub.

Glue the tabs on the rims of the upper side to their
markings on the underside of part 3.

Paint parts 4a and 4b yellow. Paint the little bars
on parts 4a and 4b black.

Glue parts 4a and 4b to their markings on part 4.

Glue part 4c to its marking on the back side of part 3/4.

Strengthen part 4d with another layer of cardboard and
glue it to its marking on part 4c.

Part 5: Paint the little rectangle at the front end of part 5 red
(in the same area as the writing "1701-D").

Bend the tabs on the rear end of part 5 by 90 degrees each
and glue the edge of the last one to the inside of part 5
	to get a closed rim.

		----------------,
		 	    | | Side view of part 5
			    `---'

Glue the edges of the tab on the front end of part 5 and
the lengthy tab on the upper end of part 5 together.

Strengthen part 5a with another layer of cardboard and
glue it (without tabs) in the front opening of part 5.

Paint part 5c light gray (leave the middle stripe white!)
and glue it on its marking on part 5.

Strengthen part 5b with another layer of cardboard and glue
it on its marking on part 4.

Glue part 5/5a/5c on the marking on part 4 so that the rim
at the rear end stands out over part 5b.

Part 6: Similar to part 5.

Part 7: Glue part 7a on its marking on part 7. Paint part 7b light
blue and glue it on part 7a.

Glue part 7/7a/7b between parts 5 and 6 on part 4. The tabs
are to be bent about 30-45 degrees.

Part 8: Paint the stripes at the front of part 8 orange.
Paint the slightly T-shaped striped area light blue.

Round the tongues at the bow end of part 8 slightly
(so that they form a cone when the part is assembled).

Glue part 8 together to a tube with a hexagonal profile.
Glue part 8a in the tube at the bow opening where the
	orange stripes are.
Glue the six tongues at the bow end on their edges together
	to get a cone-shaped tip.

Close part 8/8a with part 8c at the bow and with part 8b
	at the stern.

Glue part 8e together to a pyramid. Close it with part
8f at the wider end. Glue part 8h to its marking on
part 8g and close part 8e/8f with part 8g/8h.

Strengthen part 8d with another layer of cardboard and
glue it on its marking on part 8b.
Glue part 8e-8h to part 8d.

Paint the rim of part 8i gray; paint the inner shape
light blue. Glue it to its marking on part 8.

Paint part 8j blue and glue it to its marking on
	part 8.

Paint the three parts 8k grey and glue them to their
	markings on part 8.

Paint part 8l light gray and glue it to its marking on
	part 8.

Glue parts 8n and 8m together and glue them to their
marking on part 8. The higher side of the parts has
to be on the outer side of part 8, where it's glued
	together.

Glue part 8-8n to the markings on the port side (on the
	left!) of the hull.

Part 9: Similar to part 8.

All you have to do now is to boldly go where no one has gone before :)
