Build your own S.S. BOTANY BAY
==============================

Version 0.9, 26.08.1994 by Ulrich Prahn

This is a cardboard model of Khan Noonian Singhs Ship "S. S. BOTANY
BAY" from the Classic STAR TREK episode "Space Seed".

What you need:
--------------

- the file botany.ps
- a printer with postscript ability (or a postscript interpreter)
- one sheet of (letter or A4 sized) cardboard, 0.2 mm thick
  (around 130 g/m^2)
Be sure NOT to use thicker cardboard!
(if you do not want to paint the model, you may use gray
coloured cardboard, if it is available).
- a pair of scissors
- a sharp knife
- a ruler
- all purpose glue (I recommend UHU transparent glue)
- a wooden match (or toothpick with equal size)

Instructions:
-------------

Print out the file bay.ps on a cardboard sheet, or print on paper and
copy the printouts on cardboard with a Xerox.

General Hints:

- cut out each part as accurately as possible along the solid outline
- cut out each part only as needed

Numbers:

- To avoid confusion it is usefull to write the number of the part on
its backside after cutting it out
- little numbers on a part show wich parts are to be glued there

Lines:

_.._.._.. lines mark areas where other parts are to be glued

_ _ _ _ fold these lines downwards. To make that easier and more
accurate score these lines with a sharp knife before cutting
out the piece.( Make sure not to cut through the cardboard
          with the knife).

-x- -x- Fold this line upwards. To make this easier prick the middle
of the crosses with a needle and score beetween the pricks on
the backside with a sharp knife.

Parts 1-4 (Main Hull)
---------

Score all lines of part 1 before cutting. Round the bow end (the end
with S.S. BOTANY BAY on it) of part 1 by curling it around a smooth
pencil or by pulling it over the edge of your desk.

Fold all lines of part 1 and close the part by glueing the tab under
the other side of the part.

Form the rounded stripes of part 1 to a peak and glue them together
without a tab.

Strengthen part 1a by glueing it on another layer of cardboard.

After drying glue part 1a in part 1, so it fits with the rear end. The
little line inside the octagon should point to the seam of part 1.

Fold all lines of part 2 and close the part by glueing the tab under
the other side of the part.

Strengthen parts 2a and 2b by glueing them on another layer of cardboard.

After drying glue part 2a and part 2b in part 2, so 2a fits with the
front end (the end which is closer to the gray rectangles) and part 2b
fits with the rear end of part 2. The little lines inside the octagon
and the rectangle should point to the seam of part 2.

After drying attach group 2-2b to group 1-1b by glueing 2a to 1a. Make
sure that the axes of part 1 and part 2 are parallel.

Score and fold part 3 and glue it together to a box. Score and fold
part 3a and glue it together without a tab.

Glue part 3a with its open side on the marking of part 3, so that the
vertical side of 3a points to the side of part 3 with the number 2b on
it.

Strengthen the parts 3b. Round parts 3c and close them to half
cylinders. Glue parts 3c with their open sides to the markings on part
3. Glue the parts 3b on the rectangular markings infront of the parts 3c.

Glue group 3-3c to group 1-2b. Make sure that the edges of part 2 and
part 3 are in one line.

Glue the tab half underway part 4 at the same position it was before
cutting out.

After drying round part 4, so its cross-section gets the shape of the
parts 4a and 4b. Close part 4 on the tab.

Strengthen the parts 4a and 4b and glue them in part 4, so part 4a fit
with the front end and part 4b with the rear end (the end neare the
markings of the parts 4c) of part 4.

Treat the parts 4c similar to part 3a and glue them with their open
side on their markings on part 4 (the vertcal sides of the parts 4c
are pointing to part 4a). Glue group 4-4c to group 1-3c.

Parts 5-5d (Command Tower)
----------

Round part 5 so, that it is shaped like 5a on the bottom, like 5c on
the upper side and like 5b on the rear end.

Strengthen part 5a and part 5b and glue them in part 5 without a tab,
starting at the rear end of part 5.

Strengthen part 5b, score and fold it and close close part 5 with
it. Strengthen the parts 5d on two layers of cardboard, cut them out
and glue them to their markings on part 5. Glue group 5-5d on the
marking of part 1.

Parts 6-6b (Fuel Tank)
----------

Score and fold Part 6. Strengthen the parts 6a and 6b. Glue part 6
with the tabs on part 6a. Close group 6-6a with part 6b.

Glue group 6-6b on the markings on part 1.

Parts 7-8 (Microwave Panels)
---------

Strengthen the parts 7a and 7b. Cut out the parts 7c and 7d and glue
7c and 7d back to back together.

Cut out the little rectangle in part 7 with a sharp knife. Score and
fold part 7 and glue it together without a tab, so it becomes a box,
open to one side.

Glue part 7a on one part 7b, so the end of part 7 fits with the base
of the triangle that is part 7b. Glue the second part 7b on part 7a,
so both parts 7b are exactly on top of each other.

Glue the free tips of the base of the parts 7b on the markings on the
parts 7c.Glue the free end of part 7a in the cut out rectangle of part 7.

Treat the parts 8-8d the same way as the parts 7-7b.

Prick the little circles on part 4, widen them and stick a match
through, so it reaches out equal to both sides.

Stick part 7 over one side of the match, part 8 over the other and
glue them to the match and to the markings on part 4. The parts 7d/8d
must point to the top and to the bottom.

Now your Model of the S.S. BOTANY BAY is finished.
